My name is Otisia, and above everything else, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I am a wife to my husband, Pastor Brandon Hill, and a mama to our sweet son, Brandon Jr., known as BJ. I serve as a Worship Leader and Children’s Director at our church, Transformation Christian Fellowship, in Annapolis Junction, Maryland. I am also the Founder and Content Creator of GoodThings, an online women’s ministry designed to help women discover their identity in Christ. I am a singer and songwriter, and the owner and baker behind Grace and Butter Co. And on top of all of this, I work full-time.
When Faithful Service Turns Into Silent Striving
With all these hats, I wish I could say balance has always come naturally, but it has not. Like many women, I often found myself giving everything to everyone and leaving nothing left for my own soul. I poured out in every direction because I genuinely love my family, my church, and the work God has entrusted to me. Yet love alone does not erase exhaustion. I wrestled with feeling like I never had enough time or energy, and even when I managed to get everything done, I questioned whether I was doing any of it well. The pressure to be a present wife, a nurturing mother, an excellent leader, a consistent creator, and a dependable employee left me anxious more times than I can count. There were days when the thought crept in quietly: maybe I am not built for all of this. Maybe I should quit one thing. Or several things.
Jesus Meets Me in the Middle of the Overwhelm
It was in a moment just like that, overwhelmed and depleted, that the Lord met me in Luke 10 in the story of Mary and Martha.
As I revisited that passage, I realized how often I resembled Martha. Busy. Pulled in many directions. Carrying the weight of responsibilities that felt holy and necessary. Serving with sincerity, yet slowly becoming consumed by the doing rather than strengthened by the One I was supposedly doing it for. I believed that if I had more help or more time or better systems in place, the tension in my soul would disappear. But Jesus gently revealed something much deeper.
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed.”
Luke 10:41–42
Martha believed her anxiety would disappear if Mary simply helped her, but Jesus showed her that the issue was not the workload. The issue was the distraction. The assignments were not the problem. Her attention was. Her eyes were not fixed on the true solution. Jesus.
Busy Isn’t the Problem—Distraction Is
This truth pierced me. I realized I had been treating intimacy with God as something I would get to once everything else settled down. But everything else never settled down. And it never will.
Through this passage, the Lord began to reshape the way I walk out ministry, marriage, motherhood, and calling.
Apart from Jesus, I am nothing and can do nothing. But with Jesus, I am sustained, strengthened, and empowered.
Intimacy with God is the one thing we cannot afford to neglect while we are doing everything we believe God has called us to do. And because every busy woman needs help with the how, here are a few ways the Lord has taught me to stay anchored in Him.
Anchored Before the Day Begins
I have learned to start my day with quiet time with God. Beginning my morning with Jesus molds my day and aligns my heart. It steadies me, softens me, and gives me space to breathe before the demands of the day begin speaking. Even if it is only a few minutes, sitting with Him reminds me that I am loved before I perform, held before I lead, and led before I attempt to lead others.
Discerning Seasons, Not Doing Everything
I also pray over and do inventory on my to-do list, focusing only on what God has called me to carry in each season. As women, especially multi-gifted women, it is easy to assume that because we can do many things, we must do them all at the same time. Some seasons require all my gifts at once, but most of the time, the Holy Spirit highlights one to three areas to prioritize. For example, I am always serving my local church, whether leading worship or ministering to our community, but I am not always recording or releasing music. When it was time for me to record and release my single, God of Wonders, the Lord made it clear that music was the assignment for that season. When it is time to focus on teaching the children in our church for the spring semester, then that becomes the priority. For women who are multi-gifted, asking the Holy Spirit to guide your focus is essential. Every season does not require every gift at once.
Protecting My Peace by Guarding My Intake
Lastly, I protect my intake. What we continually listen to, watch, read, and entertain has a direct impact on our peace. What better way to keep my eyes on Jesus than to guard what I hear and see. I intentionally fill my heart with what is true, noble, trustworthy, righteous, and holy, and I avoid what distracts or drains me spiritually. The more I protect what goes into my heart, the clearer God’s voice becomes and the less room anxiety has to take root.
Ministry Begins—and Ends—With Christ
Our personal walk with Christ, and the ministries and dreams He places in our hearts, do not begin in our strength. They begin with Christ. They continue with Christ. And if they are to endure, they must finish with Christ.
A Reminder for Every Busy Woman
My prayer for every woman reading this is simple.
Remember that the same God who gave you the vision is the God who empowers you to carry it. He has called you. He has equipped you. He is with you. And He will give you the grace to walk out every assignment He has placed in your hands.
Do not forget where your help comes from.
Because here is the truth. No amount of money, success, degrees, status, relationships, accomplishments, or applause will ever bring the peace your soul is searching for. If fulfillment could be found in those places, the world’s most accomplished women would not still be aching for purpose.
Peace is not found in what we do. Peace is found in Who we sit before. Peace is found at the feet of Jesus.
So wherever you are in your journey, whether you are just stepping into your calling or seasoned and experienced in ministry, remember this.
You do not have to be everything for everyone.
You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to slow down.
You are allowed to sit at His feet.
Jesus is all you need. And with Jesus, absolutely nothing is impossible.
